Ecolibrium was started in 2023 to offer consulting services, workshops and info sessions dedicated to the concepts of sustainability, circularity and regeneration, their relevance, opportunities and practical step-by-step implementation for businesses, entrepreneurs, organisations and consumers.
We deploy a variety of frameworks, tools and case studies to help businesses and entrepreneurs to rethink and redesign their business models in accordance with the principles of sustainability, circularity and regeneration.
In the current system, financial profits and performance take centre-stage for making decisions, taking actions and measuring success. Introducing the concepts of sustainability, circularity and regenration at the governmental level signals recognition that such view is harmfully narrow and that the system must change to include all aspects relevant to our prosperity. This means societal well-being and healthy natural environment, as well as the care for the lives of the generations that are to come.
The current linear approach to consumption and production can be summarised as take-make-consume-dispose. It relies on the extraction of the vast amount of virgin materials, pays little attention to material efficiency and »greenness« of production methods, encourages perpetual excessive consumption and leaves enormous amounts of waste deposits behind.
The circular approach proposed instead aims to bring extraction of virgin materials to the absolute minimum, introduce resource-efficiency across all production methods, create awareness of the impacts of consumption, increase the durability and useful life of products, and eliminate waste by bringing it back into the system as a useful secondary resource. All this while pursuing societal well-being and inclusion.
The circular business models, which enable achieving these goals, do not require sacrificing financial performance, but derive sustainable competitive advantage from different sources and build their long-term performance and resilience on different pillars, compared to the linear way of doing business. An important role here is played by collaboration and adoption of digital technologies.
The European Green Deal adopted in 2019 seeks to achieve fair, sustainable, prosperous and climate-neutral economy by 2050. The new Circular Economy Action Plan unveiled in 2021 sets out the way how that will be done and is one of the underpinning pillars of the Green Deal.
In 2022 EU Circular Economy Package was introduced, which includes the new Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation to be adopted by 2024. ESPR aims to achieve that almost all products entering the EU market are sustainable. It introduces a number of circularity rules, with priority being given to processes and products with higher environmental impact.
At the same time, a technical committee for the circular economy at ISO is drafting its package of circular economy standards ISO/TC 343, which will be published by the beginning of 2024.
